I went on a fiber farm tour with a friend of mine yesterday. We only had time to make it to two of the four farms (Kindred Spirit and Tarantula Arms) but had a great time and learned some valuable information for when I start my own fiber farm.
After meeting the incredibly friendly Gotland ram at Kindred Spirit I have decided to stick with my Scandinavian heritage when it comes to sheep breeds. Gotland, Icelandic and Finn Sheep are now on my list of wanted items.
I had the opportunity to learn about some Angora rabbits and think it may be feasible to have a couple of them as well. They’re unbelievably cute too!
I was able to buy a couple sampler bags of raw wool, mohair and angora bunny hair so that will be some fun stuff to mess with this year. I’m curious about trying some dying projects with koolaide too. I also got to learn how to use a drum carder. Fun!
I’m hoping the farms have this tour again next year as it is tons of fun and a great resource for people that love fiber arts or want to have a fiber farm of their own. Now if I can only find a farm that has a Yak….
